On Tuesday April 26th, NAIOP and NEWiRE hosted a Community Service Day at the Massachusetts Hospital School for Children in Canton, MA. When my colleague and I left our office in Boston, it was damp and cool. One of our other colleagues who lives in Canton said, jokingly, that the weather will most likely be nice south of Boston because "its always sunny in Canton". Well, she was right! Just 30 minutes south of Boston, we were greeted by sunshine and rather humid conditions, perfect for a little garden work!

After a great lunch and an overview of the school (an amazing place -learn more about it here ), we were ready to help prepare the grounds of the school for the summer months. The school 's campus is quite expansive but they have only one grounds keeper so as you can imagine, the staff was thrilled to have volunteers help with some of the yard work. Volunteers helped edge and mulch, weed, plant flowers, and rake leaves. 4 young women from R.E.Action sponsor Richards Barry Joyce were hard at work mulching, raking and weeding! This event was open to all R.E.Action participants and it was great to see them there! It was a perfect Day to be outside!
And the fun didn't stop with the yard work and nice weather. There was even a tour of the beautiful grounds as well, which included a visit to the barn to see the horses and adorable pig Wilbur. The horses are often donated to the school by owners who can no longer care for them. They are a welcome addition to the school offering the horses a beautiful new home, and children an opportunity to not only to learn how to ride but to learn the responsibility of caring for animals.
Overall, it was a great event! Thanks again to NAIOP and NEWiRE, and to the R.E.Action sponsors who joined. Looking forward to next year's Community Service Day!
