The AIDS Walk is coming up this Sunday, June 6th! There are many ways you can get involved to support a local organization that provides services to people living with HIV and AIDS. Liz Augustine, a Building Impact volunteer, shares with us her motivations for walking.
Hi, my name is Liz Augustine. I’ve been walking and raising funds for the Boston AIDS Walk since 1988, and I’m now in my 23rd year! In the beginning, I volunteered for AIDS Action Committee, the beneficiary of the walk. One of my jobs was in the finance department, helping to pay the bills. I was pleased to see how responsible and careful the organization is with their funds. And then two cherished friends got sick with AIDS. I was with them until the very end. AIDS Action came through for them -- and for many other close friends – by providing legal services, support, help with finding good medical care and other necessary resources. AAC also works to prevent future infections, a crucial element in fighting this disease. Today, some of my friends are not just living with AIDS but thriving with it, thanks in part to the help extended by AAC. I am so grateful to this organization. Walking each year is my way of thanking them and giving back.
