This past Saturday, 26 volunteers from all over Greater Boston came together to help out at Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit located in Quincy which helps local kids get the necessities they need. The large group was put in charge of sorting clothing, meaning we took bags and bags of donated clothes and sorted them into bins by size, gender, etc. The bins of clothing then get sorted again and handed out to individual children via their social workers. Cradles is an amazing non-profit, and their Volunteer Coordinator Eric made sure the volunteers had a great experience. As he led us through the rules- no Noah's Arks bibs or stained clothing, I kept thinking he must do standup comedy on the side. The radio helped keep us busy, and we sorted through 80 bags of clothes to help 240 kids! We had one group from A.T. Kearney, a consulting group located at 230 CityPoint who won 'most random item found'. One male member of their volunteer team found a bright pink princess canopy (to go over a young girl's bed) in the donated goods. It was a blast watching him try to categorize this item! Other highlights included, The Abboud Family, led by John Hancock Tower tenant, Lori Abboud, who brought their children along! Tess, Grace, and Mason were hard at work and the Cradles staff told us they were the most effective group of kids they'd ever seen! Their Mom and Dad would sort the clothing and then yell 'Girls, Size 5 Bottoms, GO' and the kids would run to the right bin. The assembly line process worked, and the kids also had a great time. All in all, it was a great, and impactful day had by all and definitely helped us all get in the holiday giving spirit.
